Kia ora and welcome to the first blog for Little People Eat! The aim of the page is to provide a library of topics you can dip in and out of according to your needs. This blog library will take time to build up, so bear with me!
With the increasing pressures on the public health system, I started Little People Eat to help families obtain easy access to trustworthy nutrition advice for their babies and children. My experience of over 20 years as a Registered Dietitian encompasses practice in both UK and New Zealand, where I specialised in infant and children’s nutrition.
It is a potential minefield for parents to try to navigate the amount of nutrition information available in various forms and forums. Consulting a Registered Dietitian specialising in paediatrics can focus attention on what is relevant to your individual child, thereby ignoring the ‘noise’. Furthermore, Dietitians are skilled at interpreting scientific research and can differentiate between high- and low-quality evidence so that you receive the best evidenced-based advice. Where there is no published or high quality evidence, we can advise on currently accepted best practice.
My approach is to work alongside you as a parent in identifying what are the must-do’s for your child’s nutritional health within your wider family setting, and what are the lower priorities or issues that are more flexible to address over time. These decisions are made together in a holistic way, that acknowledge where you’re currently at, and align with your parenting style and aims.
My next post is going to discuss starting solids. Stand by!
